Special Kids... Special Needs

The Gifts Our Son Teaches Us Every Day

By Carissa November 20, 2015
So many times as special needs parents, we tend to focus on the things we struggle with, the things our kids can’t do and the frustrations we feel in our daily lives. Today, I am going to focus on what gifts we receive from our son, the things he teaches and the joys he brings to our family every day.

1. Everything is monumental. I have learned that there is NO such thing as a small thing! When your Special Needs child does something that makes you proud- celebrate! Appreciate the Small Things.
2. Perspective– I have learned that daily, actually- hourly that there are so many more things to think about that really matter.
3. Flexibility- I have learned not to rely on a “plan”. In a moment’s notice, it can all change and we will make it work!
4. Simplicity– I have learned that less is more with our son. Gift lists are short, name brands are unknown, and “cool” kids and “cool” things apply to all!
5. Appreciation– for all he teaches us daily, for the gifts he gives us daily, for the way he sees things and the balance he provides.
6.Patience – Not only for our son but more so for those around us as well.
7. Honesty – I have witnessed such honesty with our son. He does not know how to lie. He speaks what he knows; nothing less, nothing more.
8. Awareness– I have learned to be so much more aware of my surroundings. I am not quick to judge, and I am kinder, calmer and just more tapped in.
This list could go on and on because we truly do gain so much from the way we get to see the world through our son’s eyes. He has taught us to slow down, to forgive more quickly and be a little more literal in the way we say things.
I believe that our family would not have gained these “tools of life” as I refer to them now, without Marky’s perspective. All of these tools we learn from Marky help to keep us grounded and see things in a less clouded light!
He is a pretty amazing young man!
