HAT Theatre addressing Bullying , enter to win a set of tickets

Local Students Address This Real Issue

April 29, 2016

Bullying in our schools and in other social situations our young people find themselves in, is very real and happens

on a daily basis. But what can be done about it? How about bringing a show to RVA audiences where young actors get the opportunity

to share a message with audiences, that there ARE ways to bring about change, and that it can start with just one person treating another in a kinder way.

That is the premise of the award winning pop/rock musical, Masquerade, that opens May 6th in a limited run of only 3 performances at HATTheatre.

Featuring 20 actors ages 9-17,this musical shows how home life can impact how children act, how cliques in schools can help to create bullying situations, and how sometimes it is the small stuff that builds up and explodes when one least expects it.

Presented with a great musical score and some humor thrown in for good measure, as well as some hard hitting truths, this is one show that should not be missed.

When asked at the first rehearsal if they had been bullied, or knew someone who has been, all 20 hands went up. That alone speaks volumes.

Preston Steele, an 8th grader at Short Pump Middle School, who will be attending Henrico's Center for the Arts next year, plays Erik, a teen from a less than ideal home situation.

Angry with a chip on his shoulder, he takes his frustrations out on anyone in his path, including the new kid, Jamie, played by Jake Lester (James River High) who finds himself the center of much unwanted attention from the school bully.

Meanwhile, Tiffany, played by Nicole Green (Midlothian High) surrounds herself with a mean girl posse, in an effort to feel superior to those around her, a way of hiding from the fact her parents are not as attentive as one would hope.

On the sidelines we have K.C, played by Ian Garrabrant (St. Christophers), who on a daily basis has to deal with Erik's constant picking at him. As things escalate and tensions run high, what will happen when Erik challenges Jamie to a fight after school?
