Knights in the Garden Club at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School

BSH, located in rural Powhatan County, seemed like the perfect place to have a children’s after school garden club.  So in the spring of 2016, Mimi Ziletti, school librarian, decided to start Knights in the Garden Club for grades K-6.  A group of anywhere from 15- 20 students meet Tuesday after school for an hour to learn about gardening and the tools of the trade.  It has been a huge success!  The program includes lessons by county extension agents, Master Gardeners, representatives from Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District, local farmers and bee keepers.  Our Art teachers help students make garden art such as ladybugs out of golf balls and bird feeders from recycled water bottles. Students help take care of our vegetable and flower gardens.

In September, we took a field trip to Lewis Ginter to see the Lego Exhibit.  Students loved using their map skills to explore the garden areas looking for the fascinating structures.  We hope to expand the program and make our school bloom!
