December 9, 2016
The Holiday season is a busy time, we are all doing many things and can be easily distracted. Driving can also add distraction and your phone should not be a part of it! This is a perfect time to be reminded to put your phone down, no texting, no live videos, no checking social media- NONE of it is worth your life or the lives of anyone we love.
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has partnered with Transurban, the 95 and 495 Express Lanes, VDOT, AAA, the Virginia State Police  remind us to put down our phones while driving. Kirk Cousins says, “No text or phone call is worth risking your life or the life of others.” Everything happening on your phone can wait. Safety starts when we put our phone away, we also set the example for our children when we follow the rules we ask of them.
There is a Social media contest too! Take the pledge on PhonesDownTouchdown.com and share the image (which you will get once you take the pledge) on social media with the hashtag #PhonesDownTouchdown. This simple act can save your life or the life of a loved one. You'll be entered to win a free month of travel on the 495 and 95 Express Lanes. Did you know:
If you take just five seconds to read a text while driving at the average speed limit of 55 mph, you could travel the length of a football field without looking at the road.
Texting while driving is illegal in Virginia and most other states. In Virginia it is a primary offense, which means you may be stopped if suspected of texting while driving.
At any given daylight moment across the country, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or electronic devices while driving.
Drivers under age 18 years of age are the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted at the time of the crashes. Virginia’s teen driving restrictions are aimed at helping drivers stay safe and to reduce the number of car crashes.
Take the pledge. I did! Together, we can make a difference!
