Emily Elizabeth Children’s Design

October 17, 2014

Hello, my name is Emily Elizabeth, and this is my little red dinosaur Scoot.

I’ve decided to do something kind of crazy and start my own business doing children’s bedroom design.  So what does this mean?  When I was just about to graduate from VCU’s Interior Design program, I met someone who wanted help with her kids’ bedrooms.  She owns a business herself, and loved what I’d done with the rooms, so she suggested I start up my own.

The process of revamping her daughter’s room looked something like this:

Olivia is 11 years old and loves the outdoors.  I could immediately tell, because she would always run outside to play when I was meeting with her mom.  When asked what she wanted in her bedroom, she told me, “I want a big earth on the wall!”  Some mothers would have no idea what to do with a request like this, but for me, it opened up a world of possibilities.

Later she told me she wanted, “paint splatters and dripping paint” on the walls.  This got me even more excited!  Merging the two ideas into one would make the room much more fun.  Next I showed Olivia a bunch of different paint colors, and asked her to point out which ones were her favorites.  I used these colors as a basis for her whole room, and attached bathroom.

Thinking how fast children grow, and how quickly their interests change was an important consideration for me.  I didn’t want to make a room that she would outgrow in a few years, but instead a room that could grow with her as she goes through middle and high school.  Usually sophistication and fun don’t go well together, but I was willing to accept the challenge.

I started the decoration of her room with a fun, colorful bedspread that I knew she would love.  Then I chose other accessories that were similar colors, and fun textures for this preteen room.  I custom painted and cut stickers for each step up to her loft bed, to dress up her white bed frame.  My favorite area to create in Olivia’s room was her reading nook.  I really pushed the idea of dripping paint by making a mural of three colors that looked as if they were dripping down from the corner of the ceiling.

Not only did I create a unique new bedroom for Olivia, but also continued the same colors and themes into her bathroom.  I found some neat circular mirrors for the wall, put behind them custom stickers that I made.  They were painted and cut to look like colorful splashed of paint dripping down the wall.  Every part of her new room captures her vivacious personality.  (She was too excited to stand still for a thumbs up!)

I cannot wait to transform more rooms into beloved spaces, dedicated for each child’s personality and passions!  Check out my website at www.eechildrensdesign.com or go to Facebook.com/EEChildrensDesign and I’ll personalize your child’s room into their own wonderland!
