We can all learn from Nate!

January 30, 2015
Tell us a little about yourself, age, school, siblings etc…
I’m Nate Proctor and I am a 14 year old 8th grader at Oak Knoll Middle School in Hanover County. I am the youngest of four kids. I have two brothers, one 15, the other 19, and an 18 year old sister.  They have been very supportive of my acting career.
What role are you playing in Aladdin and what are you looking forward to in this role?
I’m really excited to be playing Aladdin.  I am looking forward to learning and becoming a better performer from this role.
How did you get started in acting, how old were you?
I first appeared on stage in my first grade play at school. I later signed up for a CharacterWorks summer camp before 3rd grade at age 8 and one of the counselors there told me about the shows. I tried out and fell in love with theater.
How long have you been with CW?
I have been with CharacterWorks for 6 years and Aladdin will be my 13th show. I started in 2009 in Jungle Book.
What is your all time favorite role that you have played?
Gavroche in CharacterWorks’ Les Miserables. I loved being able to work with the older kids at such a young age and being able to take part in such a great production.
What role would you love to play?
Jack Kelly in Newsies. Ever since I saw the movie, I became obsessed with the songs and characters and would love to take part in a production of it some day.
Do you have a favorite play that you have seen or want to see?
My favorite play that I have seen would be Les Miserables on Broadway and I want to see any production of Newsies!
What are your long term goals?
My long term goals are to go to college and study something I enjoy. Overall, I want to be happy. There isn’t a point in doing something if it makes you unhappy.
How do you manage juggling school and your theatre interests?
I stay up late a lot. I tend to procrastinate. But during tech week and the shows I try to do most of my homework at the theater.
What do you like to do when you are not in school or acting?
I like to play soccer, make movies, and hang out with friends. I also enjoy a good book and an occasional hunting or fishing trip.
Do you have a favorite movie, book, food?
I have so many favorite movies, but I enjoy a large number of Marvel and DC movies and lots of war movies. My favorite books I have read have been the Hunger Games series and my favorite food is any type of chicken, preferably without feathers.
Any suggestions / advice for the readers and their children that you can share?
Do what you love, even if people try to tell you it isn’t “cool”. Be yourself.  It doesn’t matter what other people think as long as you are happy.
