Richmond, VA — Calling all young animal lovers! Richmond Animal League (RAL) is thrilled to announce the launch of its newest youth initiative: The Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer, a free, summer-long volunteer program designed especially for kids ages 6–14.
Running from June 1 through August 31, 2025, this interactive and flexible program invites children and families to take part in hands-on activities that help support RAL’s mission to save the lives of homeless cats and dogs.
“We know that kids care deeply about animals,” said Maura Varley, RAL’s Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager. “This program gives them the tools to make a difference—in a fun, creative, and impactful way.”
Program Highlights
- Self-paced activities including reading to pets, making DIY cat toys and dog treats, hosting lemonade stands, and/or organizing donation drives.
- A downloadable Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer Packet available at www.ral.org/dogandcatdays, with instructions, handouts, recipes, and a fun progress tracker.
- Open to kids ages 6–14 (younger children can participate with adult help), school groups, scout troops, and families.
- Participation is free and open to the public.
Special Summer Reward
Every child who completes the program and returns their progress tracker to Richmond Animal League (During open hours) will receive their choice of a small plush cat or dog as a thank-you for their hard work and compassion.
Why It Matters
The Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer helps foster empathy, compassion, and community engagement in young people. By completing simple yet meaningful tasks, kids learn how even small acts of kindness can have a big impact on animals in need.
