STEM-Ed Partners: Everything is STEM-What Can We Do About..?

STEM-Ed Partners is an organization with a mission to collaboratively foster and nurture the ideas and innovations of young people and connect them with science, technology, engineering and math concepts that exist around them. 

Everything is STEM-What Can We Do About..? is a one-week field experience aimed at exposing young people to some of our biggest societal challenges and give them an opportunity to brainstorm solutions using STEM concepts. This camp is completely grant-funded and will be held Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 11 from 8:30am-3pm with culminating presentations on the final day. Transportation to the field visits will be provided along with daily lunch, snacks, water etc. 

Schedule: 

Monday- introductions, orientation and activities then visit to Central Virginia Waste Management Authority for programming facilitated by their staff around trash/litter, landfills and recycling; possible drive through the City landfill/convenience center

Tuesday-visit to the Goodwill warehouse for tour and discussion facilitated by popupstop on textiles components, repurposing and recycling

Wednesday-visit to TrueTimber for discussion on housing insecurity and activities around engineering and constructing quick wooden structures

Thursday-visit to Shalom Farms and another community garden for discussion around food insecurity and the future of urban agriculture; programming on using technology to locate ideal locations for urban farms presented by VCU

Friday-final presentations, completion of surveys (required for the grant) and wrap-up

The camp maximum is 16 attendees who will be divided into teams of four (Team Science, Team Technology, Team Engineering, Team Math) with a chaperone for each team. 

Final presentations will be around how their subject area is currently used or can be expanded to solve problems presented during their field visits. Home base for the camp will be The Discovery Center at Stony Point, 9200 Stony Point Parkway. 

This is a RICHMOND only camp - must reside in Richmond to register.
