Tips to Promote Reading and Literacy Skills

As children get older, it’s important to continue to encourage them to read more as it helps build their reading proficiency, critical thinking skills, and empathy–all of which are life-long skills that would enrich their lives. My first tip would be to encourage families, especially parents, to be a role model for their children. Use the resources you have, such as the library, and bring your kids with you to choose what books that they would like to read as a fun family experience. Use audiobooks with chapter books to help enhance the listening experience. Use subtitles when watching movies as a family to train them to read faster. And of course, talk about what you’ve read with them to encourage kids to reflect on what they have read.

Reading should be an activity that is done daily, and it can be fun too! Kids are naturally curious about many things so have them read different types of books for informational purposes, such as books on dinosaurs for those that have special interests. Reward them for reading with small things such as stickers for a trip to a place of interest, like the museum. Long car rides could also be a place where kids can practice reading out loud, a great opportunity to practice building one’s vocabulary with room for discussion. Just 10 minutes of reading every day can improve your child’s reading skills!
