The Richmond area is filled with many festive traditions this time of year, and The Nutcracker is one of the most beloved. With numerous productions taking place across the region, families have plenty of opportunities to enjoy this magical ballet. Yet, the Concert Ballet of Virginia’s performance is truly worth seeing. Blending professional artistry with community spirit, their production brings together dancers of all ages and backgrounds to create a show that is both enchanting and accessible. From sparkling costumes to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, this Nutcracker captures the wonder of the season while staying true to the company’s mission of making dance available to everyone.
Dance for Everyone: A Legacy of Accessibility
Nearly 50 years ago The Concert Ballet of Virginia was founded by Robert Watkins, deVeaux Riddick, and Scott Boyer with a very distinct goal. These artistic powerhouses, who were part of the founding of The Richmond Ballet years before, wanted to make dance accessible. For both audiences and performers.
They created full scale stage productions of classical and contemporary works to bring them to theaters all across the state. Robert, deVeaux, and Scott all believed that if someone had a desire to dance, they should be given the opportunity to train and perform on stage. They didn't want ballet, and classical training in the art, to be restricted to seasoned professionals. Through The Concert Ballet of Virginia countless performers of all ages and abilities have graced the stage and been part of a timeless tradition of artistic dance. The company has had dancers range from 5 years old up to 78. Their dancers come from all different backgrounds and with many different levels of dance experience.
