Summer is awesome. It's late bedtimes, swimming, summer camps, road trips, and kids running wild in the backyard or at the park. But somewhere between June and August, a lot of parents start wondering if their kid forgot everything they learned. You are not wrong to ask. The summer slide is a real thing, but it does not have to be a scary thing.

To help us break this down in a super practical and non-judgment way, we have someone who knows this world inside out. Anh Nguyen, owner of Kumon Richmon-Libbie, works with students year-round and has a clear perspective of what actually happens to kids' skills over the summer and what families can do that does not involve hours of summer schoolwork.

Understanding the Confidence Gap

When kids return after a long break, the most significant change often is not just their grades. According to Anh, the first thing she notices is a dip in academic confidence.

  • Kids often start second guessing themselves.
  • Students who were doing great in June might say things like "I forgot everything" or "I am not good at this anymore."
  • Usually, they have just lost their fluency and stamina rather than the actual knowledge.

Anh recalls a student who was flying through math in June but came back in August hesitant on every problem. Within just a few days of consistent practice, her confidence returned. The summer slide is really about the loss of mental math speed and reading endurance, but regular practice brings those skills back quickly.

Small Daily Wins for Big Results

You don't need to turn your home into a school to keep your child on track. Anh suggests focusing on small, impactful wins that take only a few minutes a day.

  • 10 to 15 minutes of reading: Any reading counts.
  • Quick math problems: Keep mental calculations and skills sharp.
  • Explain the "How": Ask your kids how they figured out a problem and really listen to their thinking.

These short sessions are often more effective than long, infrequent study blocks. One local mom shared that reading together for just 15 minutes before bed completely changed her daughter's confidence when school started again.

Consistency on the Go

The Kumon program is built on consistency and mastery, but that does not mean you can't have a fun, flexible summer while traveling or juggling camps.

"Consistency does not mean long learning sessions. It can be really simple." — Anh Nguyen

For busy families, Anh recommends:

  1. Morning routines: Do a little work in the morning before the day gets hectic.
  2. Kumon Connect: This tablet-based program allows students to access learning materials anywhere with Wi Fi. Students can submit work and get immediate feedback while on vacation.
  3. Focus on quality: It is not about how fast a student goes, but how well they do the work. Summer is a great time for kids to feel successful without pressure.
