Alarming Facts

THE FACTS: Obesity is preventable, yet at least 2.8 million adults around the world die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In fact, the majority of the world’s population is more likely to die from obesity than from hunger, according to the World Health Organization, Obesity & Overweight Fact Sheet. Kids are growing up overweight and malnourished from a diet of processed foods. Food Revolution Day aims to empower people to make healthier food choices that lead to healthier lives. 100% of net funds raised for Food Revolution Day will go to support food education projects through Jamie’s foundation teams in the US, UK and Australia..

How was Edible Education chosen to be on of Jamie Oliver’s 200 ambassadors from 45 countries?  That’s a huge honor!

Ann wrote an essay to Jamie highlighting the purpose of Edible Education and her goals for Richmond which mirrored Jamie’s goals for the 45 participating countries.

What is Edible Education?

Edible Education is a hands-on learning opportunity for children and adults to experience fresh, nutritious foods and how to prepare them. We teach life skills to enable students to maneuver easily from the food source to the dining table.Edible Education is a hands-on learning opportunity for children and adults to experience fresh, nutritious foods and how to prepare them. What gave you the inspiration to start Edible Education?

We started Edible Education in 2010 after teaching Culinary Arts in Chesterfield County schools. I truly enjoyed my years in the public school system.  But it is a system under incredible pressure to produce quantitative results in academia.  While cooking is completely a marriage of math, reading, chemistry, following instructions, applying prior knowledge and assessing results, administrators must focus on core curriculum and state test scores.  County supervisors have to answer to the bottom line on spending, where school culinary kitchens are often found too expensive.  Parents and students strive to build a scholastic resume for college, leaving career and technical classes at the wayside.

In a society where 35% of adolescents are overweight or obese, with an 80% chance of becoming obese adults, I knew I had to get more involved in making a difference outside of my school district, and so I started Edible Education.

What makes your approach realistic for families around Richmond?

We are not doctors or gourmet chefs, we have everyday kitchen equipment, fun and a passion for eating what is good for us without being all organicy or health-nuts about food.

Hands-on learning about fresh, seasonal food, prepared with the intention of sitting with our families and enjoying one of life’s great pleasures is our story.
