The Color Purple- Review

And winner announced

June 27, 2014

I was one of the lucky ones to attend The Color Purple on the sold out opening night. It was such an uplifting and thrilling night. The Color Purple is a musical about love, hope, redemption, forgiveness and  such inner strength.  I read the book by Alice Walker and saw the movie years later, neither touched me the way this performance did.

The music, the sets, the costumes, the cast- all of it held you captive from the very start.  You felt the depth of each of the characters pain and struggles. You cheered when Celie found the strength to fight back and you even found yourself finding compassion for Mister after all the pain he brought.

For those that are not familiar with the story line-  It is based on Celie, a young black girl living in  the 1930s in rural Georgia. The story is told by Celie, who has been raped, abused, and beaten  by the men around her. She is sent to marry an older widowed man and loses touch with her sister Nettie and her 2 children. Nettie was her best friend and strength to get through each day!

I cannot recommend this highly enough. There are some strong moments and I would suggest a date night, girls night or kids over 16.

Show runs June 20 – August 3
