HONK is the musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Ugly Duckling! HONK tells the charming story of Ugly, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, Ugly must find his way home. Along his rollicking and harrowing journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms. Witty and hilarious, but also deeply moving, HONK! will treat you to equal amounts of laughter and tears. This musical with a message is perfect for the entire family!
What's your role in HONK?
I play Ida, the mother duck.
What are some other roles you have had?
This is my eleventh show with CYT, but my favorite roles were a sewer child in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a friend of young Pocahontas in Pocahontas, and ensemble in Beauty and the Beast.
How old are you - and how long have you been involved?
I am 13 years old, and I have participated in CYT shows for the past four years. I started shows when I was nine, as a bluebird in Narnia.
What do you like most about being involved with CYT?
Probably my favorite thing about CYT is the fellowship. Most Saturdays during lunch we get together for a bible study and everyone helps one another out. Another thing I love is the fact that the organization is for youth, and younger kids have a chance to shine up there on stage.
What can the audience expect to see this weekend?
Without giving too much away, I believe that the audience can expect to see a funny yet touching story of judging, acceptance, true beauty, and loyalty.
When you're not rehearsing for a show, what else do you like to do?
I love to read, dance, and, in the summer, participate in swim team. Oftentimes I grab a book and run outside to read in a tree, just to get away from all the noise of life. I also love playing soccer, and have played it all my life.
Do you have anything else you'd like to share with the readers of Macaroni Kid?
I hope I will see many of you at the show this weekend!
