Quirk Hotel Review

A Local Gem & Getaway

By Carissa Garabedian July 8, 2016
2 weeks ago my husband and I “ran away” overnight. With 3 kids, 2 dogs and lots of responsibilities, going away alone is not easy nor does it happen as often as I would like!
I decided to make it happen, I also decided it would be a local one, giving us the beauty of not losing time. It does not have to be days long or a far distance to get the benefit of an escape!
We have been wanting to check out Quirk Hotel. We’ve heard about it, seen pictures and added it to our wish list.
Quirk, a boutique hotel, also has a restaurant and rooftop bar. Quirk, located at 201 West Broad St, in an old 1916 luxury department store. There are 75 rooms, including suites. The ceilings are 13-feet high and original maple floors are still there. Quirk connects to the Quirk Gallery, an art gallery run by co-owner Katie Ukrop with many local artists  displaying work & other goodies. You don’t have to leave the hotel but you are also in the heart of RVA & surrounded by many things to do, so if you can, you may want to stay an extra night or 2.
Check in was easy & efficient! Valet was waiting outside to take  the car. You walk into a large, open lobby area that holds the dining area and a beautiful bar. There is lots of light, beautiful architecture and a great vibe. The lobby offers very retro/ deco seating areas. Many times during our stay, my husband and I both felt we had gone back in time.
Our room was great! Light pink walls, amenities that were well thought out (sound machine, bluetooth device, refrigerator built into dresser, kuerig, snacks mostly made in the VA area) and a bed that hugged me back when I laid on it!  I loved the classic simplicity of it, not overdone, not overpacked and done with the quirkiness I had hoped for, like, the larger than life numbers outside the door &the barbie print in the bathroom. The shower was a large walk in.(Amazing water pressure too!)

We had a drink at the bar which offered great craft cocktails and service with such attention to detail.Quirk offers complimentary wine and appetizers on the mezzanine for guests, a really nice touch! Side note, while enjoying some wine and cheese with a great server- we actually ran into a friend there who was also on an overnight getaway for her birthday!

We had dinner at Maple & Pine, in the lobby area of the hotel. Again, service with exceptional detail. The menu offered something for everyone, interesting combinations, but nothing I was reluctant to try. Beautiful presentation and very generous portions. We really enjoyed the whole meal. We never felt rushed . Our waiter was so knowledgable & full of pride in the work he was doing. Their ability to make us feel comfortable exceeded my expectations.  We did have breakfast in the morning and it was also excellent. Blanchard’s Coffee makes a custom blend called, what else, "Quirk". It is a great blend. When we asked to have it described, our waiter said it had notes of chocolate and toasted walnut.

As a guest, you do get priority access to the rooftop bar, we did not make it there during our stay. There was a wedding happening and it was closed until later that night. Because I love sleep, that is what I did! There is also free wi- fi, a gym, newspapers, bicycle rentals and other open patio/ outdoor spaces.
Quirk is available for private parties/ meetings/events . You can also have a private dinner party room. They really think of everything to make you feel so comfortable.
There are some great Summer specials for you to take advantage of, including discounts to use at the restaurant and even tickets to a show across the street. Rooms start as low as $199.00.
Quirk is a child friendly hotel, if you decide you want to take your littles with you, there are many options for that too.  It's also smoke free, wheelchair accessible & pet friendly. Check out the website to see the specials, plan your getaway and enjoy this awesome city we live in.  Quirk is a gem! Elegant without being stuffy, engaging, amazing views of our city and right on our backyard! So excited to have this here! I hope you give it a try!
