Tell us a little about yourself, age, school, siblings etc…
HI. My name is Mason Jett. I am 13 years old and will be an 8th grader at St. Mary’s Catholic School in the fall. I am blessed to be sandwiched in between two incredible sisters, Julianna and Clarissa, to have two fun-loving, supportive parents, and last, but not least, to have two wild and crazy dogs, Charlie and Chewy.
What role are you playing in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and what are you looking forward to in this role?
I have the honor of playing the title character, Charlie Brown, in this production. I am looking forward to taking the audience on an emotional journey with Charlie as he experiences highs and lows and ups and downs with his friends and classmates.
How did you get started in acting, how old were you?
My parents’ friends had encouraged them many times to get me into acting. So finally at age 7, they enrolled me in my first CYT class. I remember coming out of that class the first night and telling my mom that it was the most fun I had ever had. Since then, I have not missed a season of classes.
How long have you been with CharacterWorks?
I began taking classes in 2011 and appeared in my first show, Oliver in the fall of 2012 eating gruel as a Workhouse Orphan. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is my 12th production with CharacterWorks.
What is your all time favorite role that you have played?
So far I have to say Charlie Brown and the Doorknob in Alice in Wonderland. However, I have also had the privilege to play other fun roles, such as a Wickersham Brother in Seussical and a Lost Boy in Peter Pan.
What role would you love to play?
Ooooh, this is a tough one because there are so many! One would have to be Marius in Les Miserables. Others would be Boq in Wicked, Donkey in Shrek, and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton.
Do you have a favorite play that you have seen or want to see?
I had the opportunity to see The Lion King this past spring and was mesmerized by the artistry, talent, and costuming. As for shows I want to see . . . there are too many to count actually! However, at the moment, my top three are Hamilton, Wicked, and Waitress.
What are your long-term goals?
I have such a long time left of middle and high school that at this point I only have a vision of what the future might hold for me. I know that I want to go to college and study in theater arts. I see myself perhaps as being a musical director or a performer.
How do you manage juggling school and your theatre interests?
Most of the time it’s not that hard for me. I am able to get my school work done before CWorks classes and I plan out major assignments around rehearsal schedule. When it gets hard is when I have midterm or final exams scheduled during tech week. That takes a lot more time management and a strict study schedule.
What do you like to do when you are not in school or acting?
I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. My friends and I like to go to movies, to Kings Dominion, bowling, and the mall. With my family, we play a lot of cards and board games, visit with our cousins, and go on family trips.
Do you have a favorite movie, book, food?
Food: Macaroni and Cheese
Movie: Finding Dory
Book: Tom Sawyer
Any suggestions or advice for the readers and their children that you can share?
I think the most important piece of advice I have is something I have learned through CharacterWorks. That advice is to keep your head and heart open to constructive criticism. Through the years as I have been auditioning for shows, I have had many ups and downs, not unlike Charlie Brown himself. There have been times when I have had a call back when a role came down between me and one other person and I didn’t get it. There have been times when I didn’t even get a call back at all. And after being cast in my first show, the next show I auditioned for, I didn’t even get in. Each of these experiences just made me dig deeper and work harder. I listened to the artistic team and my music coach, made changes, and kept a positive attitude. I realized that all of these people had my best interest at heart; I just had to be the one to listen and put in the work.
