Swim RVA – Autism Swims

April 10, 2017

Drowning is the #1 cause of death in children with autism. The National Autism Society reports that 90% of all deaths in children with autism are due to drowning. Children with autism react to their senses and are driven by impulse. Water is a huge sensory stimulation which draws this attention. That is why it is imperative that children with autism get the proper swim instruction.

SwimRVA Autism Swims is a program, designed specifically for children with autism, and adds to our goal of creating an inclusive aquatics community in Richmond, VA. All of our instructors have been trained and educated on children with ASD.

AWESOME testimonial:

Emily struggles everyday to fit in with her classmates. She started taking lessons in the SwimRVA Autism Swims program the week before her school, Jacobs Road Elementary, started coming for their ‪#‎LearntoSwim‬program. On the first day of LTS, Emily was ‪#‎confident‬ enough to get in the pool with her peers and was successful in a group setting. The following week, Emily passed Station 1. Mom said if it weren’t for the‪#‎SwimRVAAutismSwims‬ program, which Emily is excited to attend each week, she wouldn’t have been successful in the Learn to Swim program. When I asked Emily what her favorite day of the week was, she said, “Swimming Day.” Which now because of our Learn to Swim program, happens twice for this exceptional young lady.
