Waitress, The Musical, is a “Slice” of Fun. I attended the opening night of Waitress,The Musical , and what a tasty treat it was!
Upon walking in, ushers are dressed in diner uniforms selling pie ,the curtain is a lattice cherry pie and there are glass cases on the stage, full of pies!
Waitress is about Jenna, a young wife who waitresses at a local diner and bakes pies with names like “Marshmallow Mermaid Pie”. She is unhappily married to Earl and finds happiness whipping up pies and sharing stories of her mother when she was young and would bake with her. Jenna gets pregnant and her 2 best friends, Dawn and Becky, who work with her at Joe’s Diner, provide love and laughs throughout the play.
Dawn and Becky are incredible friends to Jenna and want her to figure out a way to leave Earl .They are all such talented woman, their songs are full of power and they have he sassiest of comebacks! I laughed numerous times with them!
All of the characters were a lot of fun and made you giggle. I will say that a favorite of all in the audience, was Ogie, Ogie is Dawn’s boyfriend and he is a hoot! Grumpy Joe, who owns the diner, is another charming addition to the show. Dr. Pomatter, Jenna’s OBGYN, was handsome and likable with a surprise ingredient. I won’t give anything away.
I loved that the band was onstage, it was such a great touch. They were there, you could see them and hear them, yet they did not take away from the performers and added such charm.
Waitress is not appropriate for younger children, I would suggest 15 and up. There is some bad language and a lot of sexual content done in a very funny way, but, it is there. It covers some serious subject matter.
“Butter, Sugar, Flour “ is whispered throughout this woman empowered play. You walk in knowing it is about pie, you walk out embraced by the friendship, strength and love created by the 3 main female characters, it is all about girl power.
For our fellow Richmond families, two local young actresses, rotate playing Jenna’s daughter. Lulu. I saw Devyn McDowell, she is is from Midlothian and Arabelle Pitera will be the other actress, she is from Short Pump. Lulu was adorably delicious !
Waitress is playing at Altria Theater through February 17, 2019. All ticket info is here.
