Grocery List Apps

By Valerie P. Tillies March 15, 2019

When it comes to grocery shopping are you a planner? Winger? Clicklist?

I’m a combination of a planner and a winger. I try to cook a new meal once a week for the family, to help encourage new foods and keep it from being so repetitive. However, the rest of the week, depending on what time of day I remember we have to eat dinner, I’m standing in front of the refrigerator trying to figure out what I have time to make before the hangry sets in. Up until recent past, I kept a magnetic writing pad on the refrigerator and would write things on the list when I thought about them or when we ran out of a particular item. The fun part was occasionally getting to the store and realizing the list is still on the refrigerator, then going off memory and forgetting crucial items on said list.

My son told me about the app “Out of Milk”, I’m not sure how my nine year old knew about this app which is why I ignored him for a while. I assumed it was something for fortnite that he was tricking me into getting. After forgetting the list, and even forgetting to put things on the list, I decided to download it and give it a try. Not surprising, it was easy to use. You just type in your food and it conveniently puts it in a category which could help prevent you from walking back and forth through the store (something my previous system didn’t account for). As you shop around you just check off what you put in your cart. What I did find surprisingly nice about the app, you can add the price of your items, because let’s be honest majority of the items we get are repetitive. I didn’t do this as I shopped, but I used the receipt and added them later. You can save your regular items in the “pantry”.  So as you prepare for your next shopping trip, you can add your pre-priced pantry foods, quantity, sales tax, and even if you have a coupon and what the dollar or percentage off would be. Once I figure out how to extreme coupon, I’ll let you all know the capabilities this app really has!

Features on the app I have not used, but you might find helpful, using the app with Alexa, Google Home, Syncs with Android, sharing list, and adding participants to view and/or edit list.

Similar apps: Grocery Pal, AnyList, Grocery IQ, Buy Me A Pie, Favado, Our Groceries Shopping List, Cellfire.
