Virginia Rep. Theatre’s Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

A Parent's Review

December 9, 2024

* Disclaimer: My family received complementary tickets from Virginia Rep Theatre to see Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and this is my review of the production.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is one of my favorite childhood movies and books of all time. I was always so mesmerized by the chocolate factory and I loved the Oompa Loompas. When my husband and I introduced our then 6-year old daughter to the movie and book, she was instantly hooked! For months, she would come home from school and watch the movie every afternoon in her bedroom.

This weekend, my teen daughter and I, along with my tween sons and sister-in-law went to the Virginia Repertory Theatre's production of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.

The production is a delightful adaptation that captures the whimsical charm of Roald Dahl's beloved story of Mr. Willy Wonka hiding five golden tickets beneath the wrappers of his famous chocolate bars to choose five lucky children to visit his chocolate factory and win a lifetime supply of chocolate.

The production does an excellent job bringing the fantastical world of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory to life on stage. From the vibrant and imaginative set design, to the uniquely creative costumes (the Oompa Loompas especially!), we found ourselves immersed in the story for 2 hours and 30 minutes. My boys were amazed by the vivid colors and intricate details of the Chocolate Factory scene!

The cast brought each character to life with fresh energy and skill. Kylan Dowdy delivered a heartfelt performance as Charlie Bucket. Matt Shofer’s portrayal of Willy Wonka is as enigmatic as it is entertaining. Charlie, Veruca Salt and Violet Beauregarde turned out to be my kids’ favorites.

The musical numbers are catchy and well-executed, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. I was especially impressed by the captivating voice of Alia Bisharat Glidden. Her portrayal of Mrs. Bucket was spot on!

Parental guidance is advised due to some mild adult language, suggestive themes and fantasy violence.

Overall, this Virginia Rep’s production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is a treat for audiences of all ages, offering a magical journey through a world of pure imagination.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is currently showing at the Virginia Rep's November Theatre now until January 5, 2025.
