Hit sculpture exhibition, Rich Soil, by artist Kristine Mays comes to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden from January 18 – March 9, 2025
Richmond, VA – Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is proud to be the exclusive Richmond exhibitor for artist Kristine Mays’ hit sculpture series, Rich Soil. The exhibit has traveled to institutions across the U.S. including Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden in Washington, D.C. and California’s Filoli Historic House & Garden, and officially opens at Lewis Ginter on January 18, 2025. Rich Soil is included with Garden admission; free for members.
Inspired by the movements of Alvin Ailey’s dance composition “Revelation,” this body of work pays honor to the ancestors — those that walked, lived and tended to this land — to the lives that have been recognized and those that have been “forgotten.” Rich Soil is made up of 29 life size sculptures presented in 7 groupings located in iconic areas throughout Lewis Ginter.
To welcome Kristine Mays and Rich Soil to Richmond, the Garden will host a discussion between the artist and Saajida Chohan, Director of Education & Visitor Experience at The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia on Friday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. The talk is free for members of both Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and members of The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia. Tickets are $8 for non- members and will be sold at the door.
