It's National Pokémon Day!
Pokémon Day celebrates the 1996 launch of the first Pokémon video games, Red and Green, in Japan. To play Pokémon, "Trainers" collect and train Pokémon while emphasizing teamwork, perseverance, friendship, and good sportsmanship. This launch was the beginning of a global phenomenon, making Pokémon one of the most popular and successful entertainment properties ever.
Pokémon has evolved into a franchise that spans video games, mobile apps, the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), animated television series, animated and live-action movies, and more. As of today, Pokémon TCG is available in 93 countries and regions across 15 languages, and Pokémon animated TV shows are available in 192 countries. This has influenced pop culture and entertainment, connecting people from all backgrounds and cultures. Games like Pokémon GO, have allowed fans to encounter and catch digital Pokémon in real-world locations through augmented reality.
Trainers celebrate this day every year, bringing together generations of fans to collect, trade, and play. Pokémon Day activities include watching Pokémon GO adventures, hosting game nights, attending TCG events, and sharing Pokémon content online using the hashtag #PokemonDay.
